Much of the interest in a city for the tourist is the influence of it's history, so here is a very brief history of the area.


Administratively, commercially and culturally the capital Budapest dominates Hungary and virtually everything in Hungary revolves around Budapest. About a fifth of the population live in the city. It was only in 1873 that Buda merged with Pest to form, originally, Pest-Buda, but later of course, Budapest. However, it actually dates back to the Romans who built a settlement here. Then the Turks, followed by the Austrians, came and stayed for long periods in the city’s history. People visit the city for a number of reasons. Those from the west make the most of the reasonable cost of what the city has to offer in the way of entertainment and dining out. There is a lot to see and do in Budapest and the discerning tourist will not be disappointed.
